Volunteers of America Ohio & Indiana hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for the Indianapolis Legacy Recovery House on Monday, March 23 at 1 PM. The ceremony symbolized the start of construction on this community project designed to give families a place to recover and heal together. Construction is expected to conclude at the end of July with residents moving in in August.

“The continuum of care provided by Volunteers of America is a critical component to recovery from substance use disorders. This new facility will provide families with a safe place to heal, access vital support and begin rebuilding their lives.”

Jennifer Martinez
Senior Vice President of Clinical Services
VOA Ohio & Indiana

Legacy Recovery House is part of a continuum of care for mothers who graduate from the VOA Fresh Start Recovery Program. Legacy House Indianapolis, like the locations in Plainfield and Columbus, IN will provide a home-like recovery-focused living environment for women and their children.

Additionally, the Fresh Start Recovery Program, currently located in downtown Indianapolis, will move into the newly renovated property on Michigan Road that was formerly Craine House. The Fresh Start Recovery program focuses on helping mothers recover from opioid and other drug addictions and have healthy children, and uniquely allows children to stay with their mothers during treatment. Fresh Start supports mothers and families with not only residential substance use treatment but also parenting skills development, counseling, mental health treatment and more.

To accommodate those in need, there will be 35 beds for the Fresh Start program, and 19 beds for Legacy House. There will be three duplexes and a triplex, with on-site childcare available. VOA’s housing for veterans will be moving into the downtown facility where Fresh Start is currently located.
