It’s Military Appreciation Month! In honor of veterans, we’ve partnered with Old National Bank and their Military Veteran Impact Network (MVIN) to host a donation drive to surround local veterans in Indiana with love and support.

Veterans often face many challenges when they return from service, like unemployment, poor mental health, physical injuries, and the need for safe, secure housing. If these difficulties go unaddressed, they can lead to homelessness.

VOA Ohio & Indiana helps veterans and their families rebuild their lives with housing, employment, life-skills, and behavioral health care to prevent or end homelessness. Many veterans come to us with nothing but the clothes on their back in need of a hand-up. Old National Bank’s donation drive is collecting essential care items to remind veterans they are valued and not alone when they walk through our doors.

We talked to one of our friends at Old National Bank about our shared love for veterans and why this donation drive is so important.

Brian Bohrnstedt is Senior Financial Officer – Wealth with Old National Bank, a member of the MVIN, and a U.S. Navy veteran.

“Our Military Veteran Impact Network works internally with veterans on our team and their families. We’ve found that creating a sense of community for veterans is really the best way to help them overcome some of the struggles that most of us veterans deal with. Externally, we partner with all sorts of veteran groups across the nine states where we operate, doing things that care for the basic needs of veterans. This donation drive is part of that effort.”

Brian went on to share why this donation drive matters for Indiana veterans.

“I believe everybody has the obligation to give back to their communities, but especially when it supports veterans. Veterans willingly signed their name on the line to commit and even give up their life for our country. This donation drive is a real and tangible way for people to help local veterans.”

As a U.S. Navy veteran, Brian is personally passionate about helping other veterans and works in his free time on projects that offer support services.

“I’m on the board of an organization called Mission First in southern Indiana. We’re building a 90-acre, $8.5 million dollar sanctuary for military veterans called The Sanctuary on the Hill. There will be an activity center, cabins, horse barn with an arena for equine therapy, extensive trails. We’re partnering with mental health professionals and all kinds of community resources. The facility is for veterans and their families to have a place to reconnect and move to the next level of their lives.”
