Beat the winter gray days with this cozy craft!

In this thrift blog, we share a wintertime craft that’s fun for kids and adults alike.

Looking for a simple, budget-friendly wintertime craft that brings joy for the whole family? This snow-kissed season, we’re turning thrifted treasure into fun and easy DIY décor. We’ll use some fan favorite versatile finds: the classic mason jar and buttons. With just a few supplies and a little imagination, you (and the kids!) can transform an everyday jar into a glowing snowman filled with faux snow and twinkling lights.

It’s cozy, it’s charming, and it’s an easy, kid-friendly project that adds handmade winter magic to your home — all while supporting VOA Thrift’s mission to help create a healthier community for all.

Let’s get crafting!

Snow Day DIY Craft

Step One: Gather your materials.

  • Mason Jar
  • Three Buttons
  • Glue
  • Scrap fabric (You’ll need less than a 12” by 12” piece)
  • Bag of fake snow
  • Battery powered twinkle lights or tea light
  • White sock or white fabric
  • Small orange button, felt, fabric, or marker to add your snowman’s nose
  • Black marker for snowman’s mouth
  • Two black buttons or marker for the eyes
  • Needle & thread

Step Two:

Make your snowman head by filling the end of a sock with fake snow (or cotton balls or pillow stuffing). You can also use white fabric and tie it with a rubber band or hair tie. Fill enough so the head will sit comfortably on top of your mason jar and tie off the end. Cut excess.

Step Three:

Prepare your snowman’s scarf by cutting one strip of fabric about 1 inch wide and 12 inches long. Make the scarf longer than you think you’ll need, you can always cut it!

Step Four:

Prepare your snowman’s hat by cutting a large triangle of fabric, making sure one side of the triangle is big enough to sit on your snowman’s head. Sew two of the sides together, creating a cone. Tie off the top for a pom.

Step Five:

Glue your three buttons in a vertical row on the mason jar.

Step Six:

Add snow and your twinkle lights or tea light to the mason jar.

Step Seven:

Tie the scarf around the top of the mason jar. Add a little flair by cutting vertical strips on the end of the scarf!

Step Eight:

Create your snowman’s face! Add the eyes, nose, and mouth with glue or markers.

Step Nine:

Place the snowman head on top of the mason jar and add the hat to the top. The twinkle lights didn’t come through, so we tried a tea light and it worked out better!

And there you have it! A warm snowman that doesn’t melt!
