At Volunteers of America, certain volunteer roles require a background check and specific training, depending on the length and nature of the service. While not all volunteer opportunities have these requirements, individuals serving in ongoing or direct-service roles may be asked to complete them. In some cases, a fee for the background check may apply and would be the responsibility of the volunteer.

Volunteers must generally be 18 years of age or older; however, exceptions may be made for youth participating as part of a supervised group or during special events.
